Which Documents Require a Sworn Translation?

What Makes a Translator "Sworn"?

A sworn translator has taken an oath before a Turkish notary for a specific language, with their identity and authority placed on record. Their stamp and signature carry legal responsibility for the accuracy of the translation. That is the difference from an ordinary translation: even if the text is perfect, an unstamped translation is not accepted in official proceedings.

Documents That Require a Sworn Translation

DocumentWhy
Civil registry extract, birth and marriage certificatesIdentity and civil status procedures
Diploma, transcript, student certificateRecognition and enrolment applications
Contracts, powers of attorney, court decisionsLegal validity
Bank statements, tax certificates, balance sheetsFinancial declarations
Medical reports, discharge summaries, prescriptionsInstitutional and insurance procedures
Trade registry gazette, signature circularsCorporate procedures

When the Stamp Is Not Enough

For some procedures the translator's stamp alone will not do; notarisation is added on top, and if the document will be used abroad, an apostille as well. The chain runs:

Sworn translation → Notarisation → Apostille

Always confirm in writing which layer the receiving institution requires — each layer adds cost and time.

Where It Is Not Needed

Internal correspondence, marketing copy, website content, presentations and product catalogues are not submitted to an official body, so no sworn stamp is required. What matters there is terminology consistency and readability, not certification.

The Most Common Reason for Rejection

Not a content error — an inconsistency in names or dates. Name spellings, date formats and institution names must be carried over exactly as they appear. A translator who "corrects" them can invalidate the document.
