Legal Translation: Contracts, Powers of Attorney and Court Documents

Why It Is a Separate Discipline

In a legal text, word choice changes the outcome directly. "Termination" and "rescission", "damages" and "penalty clause" are not interchangeable. Legal systems do not map onto each other either: an institution in Turkish law may have no exact counterpart in English or German law. In that case the translator gives the closest equivalent and preserves the original term in brackets.

Frequently Translated Documents

  • Contracts (sale, lease, service, distribution, non-disclosure)
  • Powers of attorney and letters of consent
  • Court decisions, statements of claim, expert reports
  • Trade registry gazette, signature circulars, articles of association
  • Inheritance and succession documents

  • Formatting Matters as Much as Content

In legal translation the layout is preserved: clause numbering, table structure, the position of signatures and seals, and footnotes are all carried over. An illegible seal is marked as [illegible seal] — never silently dropped. A section left out or quietly "corrected" can invalidate the document.

    The Certification Chain

Legal documents rarely stop at a sworn translation:

  • Sworn translation — translator's stamp and signature
  • Notarisation — verification of the translator's authority
  • Apostille — if the document will be used abroad

  • For documents submitted to a court, a land registry or a notary office, notarisation is almost always required.

    Confidentiality

Contracts and litigation files contain trade secrets. Your documents are seen only by the assigned translator and the responsible editor; a non-disclosure agreement is signed on request.
