Translating Documents for Germany: What You Need

Translating Documents for Germany: What You Need

The Basic Rule

German institutions and missions require Turkish documents with a German translation (English is accepted for some documents), produced by a sworn translator. An unstamped translation is not accepted.

First Ask: Is a Translation Even Needed?

You can request multilingual certificates from the civil registry. The international birth certificate (Formule A) and marriage certificate (Formule B) are already printed in several languages including German — those need neither translation nor apostille. This single step saves serious money and time on most files.

Commonly Requested Documents

DocumentUsually needed
International birth/marriage certificate (Formule A-B)Nothing — already multilingual
Full civil registry extractTranslation + apostille
Divorce or court decisionTranslation + apostille (long document, the main cost item)
Diploma and transcriptTranslation; notarisation for recognition applications
A1 language certificateAlready in German, no processing needed
Employment contract, reference letterNo translation if it can be issued in German

The Order Matters

  • Obtain the document freshly issued from the source authority
  • Apostille — district or provincial governor's office
  • Sworn translation — the apostille annotation gets translated too
  • Notarisation if required

  • Reverse the order (translate first, then apostille) and the apostille annotation stays untranslated — the document comes back. This is the single most common mistake.

You May Need to Translate in Germany

Some German authorities such as the Standesamt and Ausländerbehörde require a translator sworn in Germany (beeidigter Übersetzer) and may reject a translation produced in Türkiye. If the procedure runs in Germany, confirm this requirement in writing beforehand.

Have Documents Issued in German From the Start

Employer letters, reference letters and CVs are documents you commission yourself — have them drawn up directly in German and the translation line item disappears entirely.
